When should you see a dermatology professional?

It's important to be proactive about your skin health. Don't hesitate to contact us if you experience any of the following:

  • Persistent rashes: A rash that doesn't go away or worsens with over-the-counter treatments.
  • New or changing moles: Any mole that changes in size, shape, color, or texture; or one that bleeds, itches, or becomes painful. Follow the "ABCDEs" of melanoma:
    • Asymmetry
    • Border (irregular)
    • Color (varied)
    • Diameter (>6mm)
    • Evolving (changing)

  • Unexplained itching or pain: Persistent discomfort that impacts your daily life.
  • Flaky, scaly, or red patches: Especially if accompanied by irritation or discomfort.
  • Stubborn acne: When your current routine isn't improving breakouts.
  • Hair loss: Sudden or gradual thinning of hair.
  • Nail changes: Discoloration, thickening, or brittleness of nails.
  • Family history: If you have had a parent, child, or sibling diagnosed with melanoma, schedule a baseline skin exam even if you haven’t noticed any changes. Family history places you at increased risk for skin cancer, and a baseline assessment helps monitor for changes and provides education.
  • Annual skin screenings: Everyone should consider an annual professional skin check, especially if you have a family history of skin cancer, a high number of moles, or significant sun exposure.

Prevention is key! If you have concerns, early intervention can make a significant difference.

Nurturing your skin: Preventive care & lifestyle tips

Healthy skin is a marathon, not a sprint. Incorporating these preventive measures into your daily routine can help maintain skin health and reduce the risk of many dermatological conditions:

  • Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) daily, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours when outdoors.
  • Seek shade, especially during peak sun hours (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.).
  • Wear protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Avoid tanning beds entirely.

  • Examine your skin head-to-toe monthly, looking for any new or changing moles, spots, or lesions. Take photos for comparison.

  • Cleanse your face twice daily with a mild cleanser.
  • Moisturize regularly to maintain the skin's barrier function.
  • Use products appropriate for your skin type.

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Incorporate fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats rich in antioxidants into your diet.

  • Stress can exacerbate many skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Practice stress-reducing techniques.

  • Resist the urge to pick, pop, or scratch lesions, as this can lead to scarring and infection.

  • If skin cancer or other significant skin conditions run in your family, be sure to inform your provider and be extra vigilant.

Remember, we're here to guide you. If you have questions about your skincare routine or maintaining skin health, don't hesitate to ask.
