On August 18, 2009 the Oregon Department of Human Services conducted a Trauma Survey. On December 15th we received the results. We were awarded Level 3 Trauma designation. There are 4 Trauma Levels: There are two hospitals in the state that are Level 1 Trauma designated, OHSU and Legacy Emanuel in Portland. There are three Level 2 hospitals in the state, in Corvallis, Bend, and Sacred Heart in Springfield/Eugene area. We are one of 14 hospitals in the state with Level 3 designation. Level 3 is when you have a physician in the Emergency Department 24/7 and have orthopedic coverage and can handle trauma patients. There are 26 hospitals in the state with Level 4 designation which means they stabilize and transfer the patient to a higher level of care. We requested Level 3 designation stating we have orthopedic coverage both with the addition of an orthopedic surgeon and our use of locum tenens. In our area other hospitals with Trauma Level 3 are: Good Shepherd in Hermiston and St. Mary's in Walla Walla, Washington.
